The slow decline of Asian manufacturing has led to a steady decrease in the price of electronic gadgets in the West. The cost of an iPod, for example, has now fallen to less than half of what it was three years ago.
If our recent past is any indication, the decline in electronics prices will continue indefinitely.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve gotten pretty good at doing without the latest models of electronic gadgets. There’s something about electronic gadgets that just appeals to me. I find it an inextricable part of modern life. It makes life more convenient, more comfortable, more like what we want it to be.
But the trend is going the other way.
I have the latest electronics gadgets for business and home, a cell phone, a PDA, a webcam, a TV, a computer, a home theatre system, three iPods, two Kindles and a wireless headset. I drive a Mercedes-Benz, own a personal internet connection, and have a shiny MacBook. I have even bought a Kindle, a book-reading computer.
The temptation to acquire the latest gadget for work or for home was great. I could afford it, and I am not hurting for money. I wanted it, and I want it now.
But I didn’t buy any of it.
Instead, I bought a PDA.
I bought an old PDA, a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500, released in 2002. It’s a clunky device, but it does what I want it to do.
